This is our second year using the Illustrative Math curriculum for grades 6-8, which is available for free through Open Up Resources. It is the highest rated curriculum evaluated by EdReports, receiving nearly perfect ratings across all 3 grade levels. It was designed by mathematicians and teachers and is aligned with the common core state standards. IM is designed to get students talking about math in a variety of ways. The curriculum has great extensions for students who are looking for additional challenges, as well as great support for those students who are struggling.
We will primarily use Desmos, an online platform, to access the IM curriculum. We will however, frequently use pencil and paper in math class as well.
The units we will study this year are as follows:
UNIT 1: AREA AND SURFACE AREA
UNIT 2: INTRODUCING RATIOS
UNIT 3: UNIT RATES AND PERCENTAGES
UNIT 4: DIVIDING FRACTIONS
UNIT 5: ARITHMETIC IN BASE 10
UNIT 6: EXPRESSIONS AND EQUATIONS
UNIT 7: RATIONAL NUMBERS
UNIT 8: DATA SETS AND DISTRIBUTIONS
You can find parent information and resources for this curriculum in the "Resources for Parents" tab on this website. There is a lot of support for families who want a deeper understanding of the content and skills that students are expected to know. Below, you can find anchor charts for each unit showing that expected content.
