Our 6th grade Curriculum
6th grade social studies focuses on 3 broad topics:
Geography, Ancient Civilizations and Current Events.
Geography, Ancient Civilizations and Current Events.
Geography
A basic understanding of geography and our world is so important for students. In addition to where places are, students learn how geography affects the weather and climate, which goes hand in hand with the work students do in science. We teach through the lens of the 5 Themes of Geography (Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction, Movement and Region). We will also incorporate geography into our studies as students learn about ancient civilizations and consider how geography influenced their decisions and affected their lives.

Ancient Civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome
The other topic that we focus on in social studies is Ancient Civilizations. We will first have students consider what a civilization is and why civilizations develop in the areas that they do. We will learn about the unique components of culture that each civilization possesses and how that contributes to the success and/or eventual failure of each empire. We also recognize that none of these civilizations existed singularly, so we look at the overlap of these groups of people and how they may have interacted.

The World from A-Z with Carl Azuz is a 10 minute unbiased news program that we typically watch during the very beginning of class. It presents a variety of stories, both from current events around the globe, and human interest features as well. It can lead to some great discussions in the classroom as well as provide students with a sense of what's going on in their world.
